Delray Beach lawmaker angry with Chavez wants Citgo off Florida's Turnpike

DELRAY BEACH -- A state legislator wants Citgo, Venezuela's government-owned oil company, kicked off Florida's Turnpike in retaliation for comments that county's leader made about President Bush at the United Nations last week.

Angry that Venezuela President Hugo Chavez called Bush ``the devil'' and ``a ``spokesman of imperialism,'' Rep. Adam Hasner wrote a letter to Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Denver Stutler asking whether the state could cancel Citgo's exclusive contract to sell fuel at turnpike service stations.

Lord knows I'm no mark for Chavez, but I do think it's odd we're supposed to be boycotting Venezuelan oil on policitcal grounds. Thank God we're on such good terms with the middle eastern OPEC nations and their high-values....

And if I can address the good Representative Hasner's political explo- I mean, thoughtful statesmanship.....I can see how one would be upset at calling Bush the "Devil." But I'm sorry, how anyone can study our history (and there are several on this board who are more than well-versed when it comes to history, especially my man Trav)and still get upset when someone calls us "Imperialists." Dirty word or not, that's what we are, and it's what we have been since the beginning. I mean, one need only to look at a map of the U.S. in 1787 vs. today to figure that one out. The bigger you are, the more interests you have to protect. We're awful big, and awful spread out, and we have a lot of protectin' to do. I'm not necessarily addressing the moral implications of it, I'm just saying that's what it is.

And it doesn't have to be a dirty word (or at least carry with it a dirty meaning) when you think about the necessity of it. Especially when it comes to our policies toward Central and South America. Even James Monroe had a globe- we have two big oceans on either coast to protect us from Europe and Asia. But we are connected by land to the southern hemisphere. Ergo, it was realized a long time ago that the only way to ensure that we don't get invaded from the south is to basically be the "Super", if you will, for the western hemisphere. Bully 'em, **** on 'em, invade 'em, trade with 'em, draft their ballplayers....whatever it takes. We can debate the morality of it, to be sure, but the fact remains we have never been successfully invaded from the south (militarily, anyway)
